Maintaining your scuba diving gear is not only important in order to ensure it lasts the test of time, but also a very important safety measure. Scuba dive gear is there to help you breathe, move and see underwater. Therefore ensuring it’s in top shape and working correctly is an important habit to get into. You can keep your dive gear in check with some of our general scuba diving gear maintenance tips below.
Storage
Ensure to pack away and store your equipment correctly as per the manufacturer’s recommendations for each item. If your gear has a protective bag, pack it back away in this to prevent dust settling on it or damage to the item. During storage or transportation of diving gear, delicate or light weight items such as masks, flippers, and computers should sit on top, so as not to get crushed by heavier gear. Also check batteries of electronic diving gear regularly in order to ensure they don’t stop working whilst you’re diving.

Cleaning
After each dive, rinse out each piece of gear with fresh water as soon as possible. You can do this at the dive shop, or if it’s not possible right away you can use your garden hose or bathtub at home. Check out McNett Wetsuit and Drysuit Shampoo for a thorough clean. This will remove the salt water and prevent your equipment from corroding. It will also ensure any debris or sand is washed away too. Items such as your regulator should be soaked in fresh water so as to ensure all traces of salt water are washed away.
After rinsing, you should leave diving gear to dry in the shade to avoid direct sunlight damaging the equipment. This also applies to your wetsuit as UV rays can deteriorate the quality of the equipment or dive wear, causing it to crack, fall apart and/or fade in colour.

Our Wetsuit and Drysuit Shampoo works fast to remove organic residues like algae and bacteria, plus chlorine and salt deposits—so your neoprene gear smells fresher, stays supple and lasts much longer.
Maintenance
As with most things, equipment can deteriorate over time. The nature of diving is that salt water and sand can affect equipment, no matter how flash the technology and materials. It’s important to ensure you take your equipment into your dive shop for maintenance and servicing at least annually, even if nothing seems outwardly wrong with your scuba gear.
If any of your equipment has been performing unpredictably, slow to react, or doesn’t seem to function the same anymore, make sure to get it checked out as soon as possible. One of our experienced technicians can inspect your equipment and diagnose issues or potential problems that may come up during future dives before it’s too late.
